Before implantation the embryo must hatch from its shell to attach to the womb. In some cases, the shell is unusually hard, thus reducing the chances of implantation. Assisted hatching is therefore a procedure in which the outer layer of the embryo (zona pellucida) is either thinned or opened to facilitate hatching. This is done with help of a high precision laser attached to the microscope.
